Part of the mission of The Bach Ensemble is to serve the community as a public educator. Our education program includes:

Lectures & Notes
In the prelude to each concert (except for the Holiday Concert) Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Ronald Doiron and other music specialists discuss the various works chosen for the day’s program, their importance to the Baroque period and beyond, as well as noteworthy features to listen for during the performance.

We also provide written notes on the day’s performance in the concert program. The program for our Spring 2003 concert featured commissioned research notes from Reverend Thomas Damrosch, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Naples.

High School Internships
We offer internships for vocally and instrumentally gifted high school students to give them opportunities to learn about Baroque musical works and perform them live as part of an established ensemble.

The Bach Ensemble’s first three student interns were from Barron-Collier High School during the 2002-2003 Concert Season. For 2003-2004 we are delighted to welcome four interns from Gulf Coast High School. They rehearse with us each Saturday morning and are expected to learn the music and to perform in upcoming concerts.

Public School Workshops
We conduct workshops in local underserved schools to expose students to the beauty and joy of making music. Since studies have shown that musical education at an early age helps ensure a child’s success in other disciplines, these workshops are a critical and enjoyable way we can cultivate their appreciation of music and positively affect their future.

Similar programs, for fourth graders at Golden Gate Middle School and for third graders at Lely Elementary School, (2004 – 2005) were presented master classes on baroque music with adaptation for the students. Demonstrations of the cello and baroque flutes were compared to modern ones.

In a similar program for fourth graders, at Golden Gate Middle School in May 2004, we will work on putting together a song with fairly compelling rhythmic accompaniment and introduce two-part singing to them. We will likewise feature a violinist or cellist.

Free Public Workshops
Each year The Bach Ensemble has presented free public workshops. In 2003, a public workshop was presented at Barnes and Noble, Naples, FL. Works of Bach and Handel were performed. In 2004, The Bach Ensemble presented special master - class lectures and demonstrations (choral singing and instrumental) on “How to Listen to Baroque Music,” at the Collier County Public Libraries. Two presentations were held at the Main Branch of the Collier County Library, January, 2005 and one at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Marco Island, April, 2005).

In 2006, The Bach Ensemble will present one master class-lecture demonstration on “How to Listen to Baroque Music” at the Central Avenue Branch of Collier County Public Library on February 2nd. On February 7th. at 6:30 pm, The Bach Ensemble will present a special lecture-demonstration on “How to Listen to a Baroque MESSIAH,” at The Main Branch , Collier County Library on Orange Blossom Drive.
